about

Moment of Discovery was recorded in St Albans in April and June 2000 using two different pianos, one in St Stephen's Church Hall, the other at the Maltings Arts Theatre. I had booked the use of the church hall for an afternoon and towards the end of my recording session the church bell chimed four o'clock, reminding me that my time was up. This can be heard on the final track, giving the track its title and the clue to the others. The subtitle of the album, 'Improvisations for quickly prepared piano' was a deliberate reference to John Cage's pioneering work, whilst contrasting his fastidiousness with my own more ad hoc approach. On my walk home on a rather damp early summer's day I met an acquaintance. I told him what I had been doing, mentioning the piano preparation. He laughed and asked me rather facetiously if that entailed throwing my raincoat into the piano. I told him that was exactly what I'd done.
