about

Lost for Words dates back to 1997 and was the first ensemble album I made featuring my own compositions. The pieces came out of a period when I'd been studying for an MA in composition at De Montfort University with Gavin Bryars as my mentor and some of the material was developed as part of that. It is the most prescriptive work I have done, with all parts being notated apart from the drums, though I did allow for a bit of improvisation here and there. The instrumentation was informed to some extent by an interest I was developing at the time in the Norwegian folk ensembles known as spelemannslag, predominantly fiddle-led but with added accordion and double bass. Another influence at the time was Angelo Badalamenti's music for Twin Peaks, which can be heard in the track 'The White Lodge'. I had already written this piece when I visited discovered that Gavin Bryars was also a big Twin Peaks fan and had also composed a piece called 'The White Lodge'. I'm playing mostly accordion but there are twelve other musicians featured on the album, collectively known as The Last Dance Orchestra.
